Used Oil Disposal

Waste management legislation in South Africa prohibits the disposal of hazardous waste into landfill. Used oil is defined as hazardous waste. Many companies irresponsibly “dump” their hazardous waste in general waste dumps or even in open ground. A large percentage of oil that is used underground in mines never comes out of the mine. It is simply dumped underground! This illegal used oil disposal makes the ground toxic and causes soil and groundwater contamination.

The Rose Foundation

ROSE (Recycling Oil Saves the Environment) is a non-profit organisation registered as a Section 21 company in South Africa. It manages the environmentally acceptable collection, storage and recycling of used lubricating oil in South Africa.

ROSE established an organisation called NORA (National Oil Recycling Association) to promote the interests of the South African used oil industry in the collection, storage, refining, recycling and utilisation of used oil in a sustainable, ethical, environmentally compliant and responsible manner. The Old Oil Man is an Associate Member of NORA.

How do You Dispose of Used Oil?

Used oil recycling is the most environmentally friendly way of disposing used oil. In addition to used oil recycling, the ROSE foundation has evaluated:

-Incineration of used oil at high temperatures, e.g. cement and lime kilns

-Burning untreated used oil

-Blending used oil and fuel oil.

Incineration is most effective at destroying the used oil - but it adds the least value. Burning untreated used oil merely dilutes the harmful components into the environment. And using untreated used oil in outdoor applications causes soil and groundwater contamination.

Used Oil Recycling

Used oil recycling is the most environmentally friendly way of disposing used oil. Most of the used oil recycled by The Old Oil Man is collected by NORA-SA members.

The Old Oil Man takes the used oil and processes it, recycling the oil into a product called burner fuel. This fuel is an alternative fuel to diesel and is at a better price than traditional products. Contact us for more information...
